Description

The English as a Second Language (ESL) academic program at E.D.P. School has been designed for students whose native language is not English. The course aims to develop a student’s English proficiency levels and confidence in the areas of reading, writing, speaking, and listening to help prepare them for entry into further academic endeavors or career programs. The course of study is based on an integrated skills approach with listening, speaking, reading, writing, and grammar components. Fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written English are emphasized.

This course has two combined modules: an ESL section, and a Business Communications component. The primary goal of the ESL class is to help non-English speaking students gain proficiency and confidence in the use of the English language. The Business Communications portion of the curriculum will cover many of the essential skills needed to conduct business in English. Finally, the “Human Relations” unit is designed to incorporate basic principles from the Behavioral Sciences which apply to help establish positive relationship building among individuals in a work setting.

English as a Second Language being taught as E.D.P. School in Brooklyn, New York.

The ESL program will start out by being introduced to the core foundations and fundamental basics regarding English, including basic everyday English vocabulary words, popular expressions, and instructions to describe everyday actions, needs and abilities. Students will also be able to articulate basic forms of questions and practice these skills through communicative and functional activities.

As students become better at English, the focus of the course will shift towards further improving the student’s communication skills and receive helpful and positive feedback from a one-on-one tutor, which typically strengthens the student’s grasp on vocabulary and expressions substantially.

The aim of the Business Communications section of the course is to introduce practical applications of basic language usage skills with an emphasis on the fundamentals of writing and editing for business. Reading comprehension skills will be improved through discussion of texts drawing from various fields of business studies such as management, information technology, banking, commerce, etc. and grammatical phenomena will be taught through a series of exercises. Also, students will be able to – effectively and politely – chair meetings; make opening and closing statements; agree, disagree and interrupt, suggest and express firm opinions, and greet, welcome and introduce.

Through readings, critical thinking/problem solving, writing, role-playing, and case studies, students will develop basic human relations skills essential to effectively functioning in the modern workplace.

Please keep in mind that our English as a Second Language (ESL) academic program has been designed with true novices in mind. It is a beginner’s course which aims to take students from speaking no English at all, to being able to fulfill basic communication needs, including giving personal information and describing their daily routines as well as the world around them.

This course has been approved by the New York State Education Department and accredited by the Middle States Association of America.
